Camp Naco – a cornerstone of Buffalo Soldier history in Arizona – has been selected as the site for a documentation field school hosted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s HOPE Crew to be held in late July 2024.

The HOPE Crew is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation dedicated to empowering a new generation of preservationists through Hands-On Preservation Experience (HOPE). Ten students from six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been selected to participate in this field school as part of a larger Digital Documentation Fellowship (DDF) offered in partnership with the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. After a week in Washington D.C., the students will make their way to Southern Arizona for the field school based at Camp Naco.

THE HOPE Crew is scheduled to arrive July 20 and is excited to come to Camp Naco. “The HOPE Crew is excited to bring our student fellows to Camp Naco”, stated HOPE Crew Director Milan Jordan. “Many of the students are unfamiliar with the African American heritage in the West, including the proud legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers. This program is a great opportunity to provide the combined benefit of career-ready trade and documentation skills with a purpose-driven awareness of why we preserve sites like Camp Naco.”….read full story (online subscribers only)
