BUSD Seeking Voter Approval To Continue Override

The Bisbee Unified School District Governing Board is seeking voter approval to adopt a 10 percent budget override for the district’s maintenance and operation (M&O) budget starting with fiscal year 2027/2028.

According to information provided by the district, “the fiscal year 2027/2028 budget override authority represents an extension of the existing budget override authority which is scheduled to phase down by one-third for fiscal year 2028/2029 and another one-third in fiscal year 2029/2030 and will terminate for fiscal year 2030/2031 if the voters do not approve the override. The district’s current 10 percent budget override is by law required to be reduced by one-third in fiscal years 2028/2029 and 2029/2030. Because the existing override does not begin reducing until fiscal year 2028/2029, the proposed 10 percent override budget will equal the 2027/2028 alternate budget.”

The full budget override amount is estimated to be $563,074 and would be funded by an estimated tax rate of $0.81 per one hundred dollars of net assessed valuation for secondary property tax purposes, which is approximately equal to the current tax rate levied for the existing override. In future years the amount of the increase will be as provided by law, according to the district.
