One woman is on a mission to build a resort that would double as a girls camp a few weeks each summer with the philosophy “if you build it they will come.”

Acacia Barnett, president of the Hattie B, Black Women in Progress (BWIP) Foundation is based in Sierra Vista said she along with her board are looking at land in Bisbee and a few other areas to build a luxury resort that would also be home to a girls camp each year that would accommodate the nearly 200 girls that attend her foundations summer camps.

Barnett said this year marks the 10th year of the summer camps and each year gets more difficult and costly to find accommodations for the large number of girls who attend the empowerment camp. “The idea came about because it is getting harder and very expensive to rent facilities for a summer camp each year. We ended up in northern Arizona in order to accommodate the girls and staff. We have had to pay over $50,000 for the two-week camp.”
