Freeport McMoRan plans to begin demolition of the Lavender mill concentrate thickener structures associated with historic copper mining operations in Bisbee. The thickeners processed ore from the Lavender Pit between 1953 and 1974.
The demolition of the aging structures addresses the company’s policies supporting public safety and reports of trespassing on its private property. The thickeners and other aging structures that have been removed in recent years were among the historic mining operations that preceded Freeport’s acquisition of Phelps Dodge Corporation in 2007.
