New Jail Budget Increases $30 Million

The Cochise County Jail District approved increasing the new jail project by $30 million in order to meet the needs for the new facilty.

The need for the increase came after a work session last week to discuss planning and budgeting. During the discussion members of the jail district learned that $130 million was no longer enough to cover the new build accommodations as previously discussed before the voters approved a dedicated half cent sales tax for the new build.

Jeff Threet president of Stone Creek Engineering who was in attendance at the work session told the jail district members the project design and plans were far over budget based on the need request for the new jail. He told them they would need to come up with additional funds or cut the project to meet the current budget saying the county would have to decrease the number of beds, medical facilty services and future expansions.
